Arizona Cardinals

jets_007But that was Adam Morgan, and this was Hader, one of the toughest relievers in baseball. The Brewers were leading 2-1 in the eighth inning, but the Cubs had the tying run at second base.

First place was on the line.

Heyward breaks down Cubs’ 11th inningJason Heyward says the Cubs’ five-run 11th inning is what they’re capable of and it’s nice to see their hard work and practice executed.

In layman’s terms, Heyward is (finally) using less arms and more hands. The Cubs have been waiting for this day. For good measure, he doubled home two more runs — again off a lefty — in a five-run 11th inning, helping the Cubs vault over the Brewers and into first place in the NL Central.

Our guys are like loose cannons in the dugout, Maddon said. There are no tight butts. It’s kind of interesting to listen to the conversation, even in a tight game. They’re in the present tense, and that’s all I can ask for.

But up stepped Heyward, fresh off an improbable, ninth-inning, walk-off grand slam — off another lefty — just a few days ago in a win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

I think he needs to work on his off-hand, mitt side, on the release of the ball, McCarthy said Monday, via ESPN. So that’s what the tape showed me. It’s a charity [game], but most importantly, we don’t have any long-term concerns. We’re talking about scheduling surgery probably midweek. So it’s unfortunate but it’s for a great cause, I’m just glad he’s OK.

Matthews has been absent from OTAs while he recovers from offseason knee surgery and will be excused from mandatory minicamp next week after yet another procedure.

ARLINGTON, Texas Justin Verlander struck out nine in seven innings after Shin-Soo Choo homered on the Houston ace’s first pitch of the game, and the Astros went on to beat the Texas Rangers 7-3 Friday night.

The hard-throwing right-hander gave up three earned runs after allowing just two in his first 40 2/3 innings on the road this season, but the Astros gave him a 4-1 lead in the second, capped by George Springer’s two-run double .

Houston held on even after Rangers slugger Joey Gallo bunted against the shift for a base hit in the sixth inning, drawing a big ovation from the crowd. The Astros had been putting six defenders to the right side of second base when Gallo batted this season, and old-school baseball fans had been urging him to bunt toward third and beat the shift. Verlander escaped that inning to preserve a 5-3 lead.

Richie Incognito got his wish and is moving on from Buffalo.

The Bills on Monday announced they have released the veteran offensive guard from the Reserve/Retired list.

Incognito has been rumored to be nearing retirement in recent weeks after playing 12 seasons in the NFL with the Rams, Bills and Dolphins. The 34-year-old announced in April he was retiring because he was too stressed, saying his “liver and kidneys are shutting down” as a result, but changed his mind a week later before asking the Bills to release him from his contract.

In 2016, Tepper and Appaloosa moved from New Jersey to Miami Beach. He was the richest person in New Jersey before he left. He became the second-richest person in Florida upon his arrival.

Vanderbilt University sports economist John Vrooman expects Tepper as Panthers owner to be more “fan friendly” and “accessible to media” than Richardson was.

Some have suggested the fact that Jones’ guaranteed salary has run out could be at the center of his unhappiness. That concern could be sparked by the Cowboys’ recent release of Dez Bryant, who was cut with two non-guaranteed years remaining on his contract.

But for Jones, the Bryant saga should not be anything more than a minor consideration. Jones obviously will be on the team this year, so he may as well consider his $10.5 million salary guaranteed. There is virtually no chance Atlanta would release him from his $12.5 million salary next year, either, barring a catastrophic injury. Bryant was ineffective (at least to the level of his salary) for nearly three years before he was cut. Jones could survive one bad season.

There are only a couple reasons a Jones holdout would make sense. He could be looking to strike while the iron is hot and sneak in a raise, or he might want better cash flow in his contract.ravens_172
